Gerald Richards was born in Calgary. After graduating from high school in 1937, he started work at The Calgary Herald. In February 1940 he joined the Calgary Highlanders and was sent to England later in the year. He returned to Canada in 1942 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant, taking his training at the Gordon Head Training Camp, Victoria B.C.
